Facts about The Posies | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
This property was reserved for info about the most symapthic rock band of Seattle, the Posies. I'm a Belgian fan, 'hypercrazy' about them since I saw their performance in the Dutch TV project "2 meter sessions". They played an outfreaking version of "Burn and shine" and a genious cover of Deep Purple's "Black Night". Ever since I try to witness every gig they do in Belgium or around. The Posies started a brilliant but underestimated career as Kenneth Stringfellow and Jonathan Auer recorded "Failure" (Popllama) in 1988. Failure was a bunch of catchy acoustic melodies. Although these tunes still sound very nice, Jon and Ken don't like to be reminded at those days. They played all instruments theirselves. In 1990, in the meantime Posies changed the small label for major Geffen, they came up with "Dear 23". It became an album in the same style, although the sound was more electric. Although Posies came out of the same 'heavy' scene as Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mother Love Bone, they stick with their own, more soft sound. That changed a bit when in 1993 "Frosting On The Beater" was released. This was a more guitar minded album, more close to the more succesfull friends of Pearl Jam, Nirvana and co. Anyway the difference was short, catchy poprock tunes of which some finally got some airplay on the radio. In those days Posies reached playlists with "Dream All Day", "Flavour Of The Month" and "Burn and Shine". Ever since it was a pleasure to see the guys play live gigs with this recognizable material. As extra they added "Surrender" of their idols Cheap Trick or an unexpected oldschool rock tune. It was quiet for a while, but in 1996 finally the fourth album came out. "Amazing Disgrace" was again heavily influenced by the more heavy idols. Songs like "Daily Mutilation", "Ontario" and "Fucking Liar" were in the line of the "Frosting..." material. Even more rough was the beautiful ode Grant Hart, to the same named member of Husker Du. Meanwhile there were a few changes in the band. The central duo was still Stringfellow-Auer, but they got other explosives behind the drums (Brian Young, also known as the drum kid of Fountains Of Wayne) and the sympathic Joe Skyward on bass. Posies started to appear at some soundtracks and tribute albums like Reality Bites, Geffen Rarities, Hollies tribute,... 1998 started with the scary rumours that Posies would split up. Meanwhile I know for sure that it's bollocks. In march, the ironically named fifth album "Success" was released, on Popllama again. It's a little more soft again, a little more adventurous too. With brilliant songs as "Eveything's ruined", "Start A Life" and "Farewell Typewriter" Posies are a little bit in the picture again. As we know now this won't be the last record to expect of them. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
